One of the best ways to keep your freshwater aquarium clean is through the use of an under gravel filter. The idea is that bubbles will draw waste and debris to the bottom of the tank where your cleanup crew (snails, plecos, etc) can take care of it. Whatever they don’t get can easily be removed by you, using a siphon.
